"Younger Now" is the second single from Miley Cyrus' sixth studio album of the same name.

Background Edit

After Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015), Cyrus spent the time reclaiming her once wholesome image in the run up to her new material, Younger Now. Ahead of the album's September 28, 2017, release date, she premiered alt-country pop gems like "Malibu" and "Inspired", before unveiling the album's title track on August 19, supported by a music video.[1] It is a twangy pop song,[2] that features a grade school portrait as the cover artwork.[1] Lyrically, the track is a soaring reclamation of the changes Cyrus has experienced over the last several years, ending with a declaration that she now is the best version of herself. "I'm not afraid of who I used to be / No one stays the same," she proclaims. "Change is a thing you can count on / I feel so much younger now".[1]

Critical reception Edit

USA Today's Maeve McDermott claimed that "the song is infinitely more listenable than most of the music from her Dead Petz phase", but criticized Cyrus for "not offering much in the way of meaningful self-reflection on the song".[2]

Music video Edit

The song was accompanied by a music video featuring a "mishmash" of 50s-inspired imagery. In the video's most on-the-nose moment, one of the sideshow characters that populate its carnival setting spins upside down on a stripper pole, as the words "No one stays the same" flash in front.

USA Today estimated the the stripper scene is "a flashback to Cyrus grinding on Robin Thicke and twerking in the "We Can't Stop" video during her Bangerz years".

Lyrics Edit

[Verse 1]
Feels like I just woke up
Like all this time I've been asleep
Even though it's not who I am
I'm not afraid of who I used to be

[Chorus]
No one stays the same (oh, oh)
You know what goes up must come down (oh, oh)
Change is a thing you can count on (oh, oh)
I feel so much younger now (oh, oh)

[Verse 2]
Feels like I've been living in a dream
But never make it to the end
My eyes open when they feel the light
It's always right before I'm about to scream

[Chorus]
No one stays the same (oh, oh)
You know what goes up must come down (oh, oh)
Change is a thing you can count on (oh, oh)
I feel so much younger now (oh, oh)

[Bridge]
What goes up must come down
What goes up must come down
What goes up must come down
What goes up must come down (yeah)

[Chorus]
No one stays the same (oh, oh)
You know what goes comes back around (oh, oh)
Change is a thing you can count on (oh, oh)
I feel so much younger now (oh, oh)
I feel so much younger now (oh, oh)
I feel so much younger now (oh, oh)
