"Goodbye" is the eleventh track from Miley Cyrus's second studio album, Breakout. The song is a Pop and Country pop song that discusses the aftermath of an emotional breakup.

Background and Recording[]

"Goodbye" was written by Miley Cyrus, Antonia Armato and Tim James, while being produced by the latter two, and was recorded in 2008.

Composition[]

"Goodbye" features a stripped-down, natural, emotional and acoustic production. With guitars and soft drums, before being led by a small orchestral music escalation by the bridge. Musically, it's a Country Pop song but follows the standard pop music order, though musically it's a sad song. Cyrus vocals stay within the contralto range, and were considered more "roosty", natural and husky, something of which Music Critics noticed. Lyrically, the song deals with the difficulties of dealing with the aftermath of a breakup. In the first verse, Cyrus reveals that, despite that the boy had broken up, she still loves him, and thinks about him everyday and looks at photographs of them together. During the chorus, she begins to remember some of the best times they had together. She finds herself remembering the "simple things... until [she cries]. During the second verse, she continues to immerse herself in their memories, and cries through it all, she then contemplates to call him, but dejects, knowing it'll be a waste of her time, believing he doesn't care about her anymore. Surprisingly, during the bridge, she gets a call from the supposed ex-boyfriend. He reveals that he remembers everything about their relationship, such as their kiss, them dancing [with no music]. He starts to cry, revealing the biggest regret he made, something she wishes he would forget... is him saying goodbye to her. The end is never revealed, whether they got back together or she decided to be on her own.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I can honestly say
You've been on my mind
Since I woke up today, up today
I look at your photograph all the time
These memories come back to life
And I don't mind

[Chorus 1]
I remember when we kissed
I still feel it on my lips
The time that you danced with me
With no music playing
I remember the simple things
I remember till I cry
But the one thing I wish I'd forget
The memory I want to forget
Is goodbye

[Verse 2]
I woke up this morning
And played our song
And through my tears I sang along
I picked up the phone and then
Put it down
'Cause I know I'm wasting my time
And I don't mind

[Chorus 1]
I remember when we kissed
I still feel it on my lips
The time that you danced with me
With no music playing
I remember the simple things
I remember till I cry
But the one thing I wish I'd forget
The memory I want to forget

[Bridge]
Suddenly my cell phone's blowing up
With your ringtone
I hesitate but answer it anyway
You sound so alone
And I'm surprised to hear you say

[Chorus 2]
You remember when we kissed
You still feel it on your lips
The time that you danced with me
With no music playing
You remember the simple things
We talk till we cry
You said that your biggest regret
The one thing you wish I'd forget
Is saying goodbye

[Outro]
Saying goodbye
Oh, goodbye
