"Rooting for My Baby" is the fourteenth track on the deluxe edition of Miley Cyrus's 4th studio album Bangerz.
The song musically strays away from the urban-pop-esque sound from the rest of Bangerz, and musically captivates genres such as Indie Pop, Blues and Soul music, with elements of Country. Lyrically, the song discusses a relationship in a tough period and no matter what, Cyrus is still fighting for their love, therefore, "rootin' for her baby".
"Rooting for My Baby" received critical acclaim, with most critics comparing the music to artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Fiona Apple and Paula Cole, as well as praise going to Cyrus' vocals and Williams production, liking it to 1970s music.
Recording and Composition[]
"Rooting for My Baby" musically strays away from Bangerz, which constantly blends Hip Hop, Pop and Electronic music. Whereas, "Rooting for My Baby" is a laid back, stripped-down number. Predominantly an Indie Pop, Soul and Country song, lyrically the song relates to Blues music. With a hallow backing beat, that goes in a 1-1-2 beat and a dreamy intertwine, Cyrus' vocals are naturally comfortable, sounding relaxed and heavy. The song was written by Miley Cyrus and Pharrell Williams while being produced by the latter.
Critical Reception[]
Surprisingly, "Rooting for My Baby" received critical acclaim from contemporary music critics. Critics praised Cyrus' vocals, the nature of the song, the production, the sound and Cyrus' diversity compared the rest of "Bangerz". In an album review by Anna Kiplinger from ChicagoNow, stated that she "loved that it was a little quieter" and compared it to a 1970s sound. In a "Top 5 Songs from Bangerz" review, Duncan Cooper of The Fader listed the song at #4, stating "I actually really appreciate Miley's interest in making such low-energy, not-brash music—I think it bodes well for the future, setting the seeds to diversify her sound."
Brad Wheeler of The Globe and Mail, praised the direction of the song in contrast with the album stating; "The track itself, unlike the mostly disposable (if likable) bulk of Bangerz, shows potential and makes Cyrus more rootable than I would have thought possible.", while calling mature and sultry.
