"Bottom of the Ocean" is the seventh track from Miley Cyrus's second studio album, Breakout.

The Pop and Minimal song was noted for its experimental production, capturing elements of Chillwave, Ambient and Adult Contemporary music. The lyrics reflect the chill inducing song, depicting a melancholic breakup, and uses their breakup as a figure of speech to explain the boy is somewhere she'll never find again; the bottom of the ocean.

Background and Composition[]

"Bottom of the Ocean" was recorded sometime in 2008. Written by Miley Cyrus, Antonina Armato and Tim James and produced by the latter two.

The song is a Pop and Minimalist song with elements of Chillwave and an Ambient back-drop and a thick sub-bass as ocean waves can be heard in the background. The lyrics pertain double entendres for a lost romance, the male counterpart of which, is lost (meaning they brokeup and she can't find him anymore) and is somewhere she'll never find again; the bottom of the ocean. Towards the end of the song, Cyrus comes to terms with the tarnished romance, and reveals she cares most about the boys' happiness, and ultimately moves on, telling herself "be happy".

Critical reception []

The song recieved generally positive critical reception, with most critics noting the experimental production.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
It's been in the past for a while
I get a flash and I smile
Am I crazy?
Still miss you baby
It was real, it was right
But it burned too hot to survive
All that's left is all these ashes

[Chorus]
Where does the love go?
I don't know
When it's all said and done
How could I be losing you forever after all the time we spent together?
I have to know why I had to lose you
Now you've just become like everything I'll never find again
At the bottom of the ocean
Do-do-do
Do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do

[Verse 2]
In a dream you appeared
For a while you were here
So I keep sleeping
Just to keep you with me
I'll draw a map
Connect the dots
With all the memories that I got
What I'm missing
I'll keep re-living

[Chorus]
Where does the love go?
I don't know
When it's all said and done
How could I be losing you forever after all the time we spent together?
I have to know why I had to lose you
Now you've just become like everything I'll never find again
At the bottom of the ocean
Do-do-do
Do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do

[Speaking]
This is it...
Let go...
Breathe...

[Bridge]
You don't have to love me for me to, baby, ever understand
Just know I love the time that we both had
And I don't ever want to see you sad, be happy
And I don't want to hold you if you don't want to tell me you love me, babe
Just know I'm gonna have to walk away
I'll be big enough for both of us to say, be happy

[Outro]
Do-do-do
Do-do-do-do (be happy, be happy)
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do
Be happy
Mmmmm, be happy
